Rowe-Quinn To The Emergency Vet!!

Anal gland abcess! What the heck is that? No really, I've known about the condition, just never with my dogs! Heck, I just trimmed hind quarter hair last week. I didn't notice his butt licking, which, he'd never really done very much before this. I mean, yea, okay, I noticed once or twice that's why I trimmed him. I thought he had matts so this is why I gave him a trim. He hadn't been particularly sensitive in that area then. Well, that wasn't it.

Friday evening, he was yipping, screaming while outside trying to do his business! He couldn't go!!! So, I tried a warm water and epson salt compress. The gland was so taut and hot to the touch. There was no way he was going to let me try to express it.

So, I checked the funds on my debit card, called to get a quick estimate from the emergency vet clinic, got $100 more from my boyfriend and off we went. Poor Quinn, he thought we were off on a great adventure.

The people at the clinic were quite wonderful. The vet was very sensitive and informative. I also found out that Rowe-Quinn weighs 83 lbs! I think he needs to cut back a little on the dog food, increase his fiber, and exercise more. I've been a little slack with his (and the other's) daily walk.

So, back at the clinic. I had two options; one was he could be anestisized and the lancing, and flushing could take place while he was under. Or, he could be given a pain killer and kept awake. Yes, cost was a factor and so I opted for the pain killer. I really didn't want to leave him there over night. He's my baby and he knows it. OMG, he was crying out like a little terrier puppy! I kept telling myself that, "no way was that Quinny". He's an 80 lb dog for crissakes. Well, then the crying stopped, the vet came out and all would be well. I signed the papers, got his pain meds and antibiotics and at 12:30 am we headed home. He was in pain and tired and I was just tired.

It's Sunday as I write this. He's not eating very much so I blended in some meat juice and green beans with his regular dog food. He has to eat. The incision seems to be healing alright. There's no swelling and the redness has all but disappeared. I believe we are recovering. Rowe and me both.

My Shy Boy Rascal

Rascal is a great boy! But shy, oh yea. His daily walk starts out just great, but the second he sees or even hears another human, he starts pulling in the opposite direction. I practice the "cesar's way" to correct him. I make him stand until he stops pulling or starts to relax, but that almost never happens.

Rascal came to me through rescue.........

Here he is when he was photographed at the animal center (dog pound).

He remained shy and distant at the property of the director of the GSD rescue. Whenever I went there to get photos for their website, Rascal (then was named Raza).

One day on a visit, the director says to me, "I don't know what I'm going to do about Raza". "What do you mean?" I asked. She told me that he had bit her. Not seriously, and (IMHO) not that she didn't deserve it. She had been brushing him and when he tried to walk/get away she had grabbed his tail!!!! Can you imagine, I'd have bit her too! So, I says to the lady, "let me take him to my place for a 'little while' and see if I can help him out of his shell". Well he was already a year old by then. His shell was pretty solid.

Here's what he looked like then, at my home in Austin. He was pretty happy to be out of that pack environment. My two dogs at the time were quite friendly and not at all in getting into Rascal's space. We gave him a lot of time to acclimate.

And acclimate he did:
He was way more confident, and even started to have fun. Just as long as I didn't try to approach him.

Couldn't Handle It!

Well, I just couldn't. Jet had amazing energy that I couldn't match. Some great friends of mine at the Central Texas SPCA took him in and now he's found his forever home!

"I am an Animal Rescuer"

My job is to assist God's creatures.
I was born with the drive to fulfill their needs.
I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures without planning or selection.

I have patted many a mangy head with a bare hand.

I have hugged someone vicious and afraid.

I have fallen in love a thousand times.

(Yep, same dog)
And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count.
I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven, but I believethere are. Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind?

Some may think we are masters of the animals, but the animals have mastered themselves... something people still haven't learned.

War and abuse make me hurt for the world, but a rescue gives me hope for mankind.

We rescuers are a mostly quiet but determined army, and we are making a difference every day.

There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan, nothing more rewarding than saving a life, and no higher recognition than watching them thrive.
There is no greater joy than seeing a human or non-human baby play who, only days ago, was too weak to eat.

By the love of those who I've been privileged to rescue, I have been rescued.

I know what true unconditional love really is, for I've seen it shining in the eyes of so many grateful for so little.
I am an Animal Rescuer.
My work is never done.
My home is never quiet.
My heart is always full.

Jet Is Doing Really Well

Well, Jet is still here with me and mine, but boy-howdy, he's an interesting little chap!

He has been doing his best to learn the basics of the word "no" and "go potty". I was cuddling with him this morning when a had a vision of what his life was like before he ended up at TLAC.

This is what I think. I think he was born to a family that wasn't "expecting" pups from their unaltered female, back-yard dog. These people were able to find homes for most of the pups, but Jet was the most difficult, or maybe it was that he was the cutest? No matter, they couldn't keep him inside the house, that would mean they'd have to train him some. So, he barked. And barked, and barked.

Anyway, he's been spared both the life of a back-yard dog and being dead.

Once I understood this, I was more sympathetic to his needs, more patient, and level headed with his basic training. Jet is a darling.

I'm Thinking, OMG, What Am I Doing?

Yes, that is what I was thinking. Still, am thinking. Rock this semi-stoic ship by bringing a puppy into the family! Even though it's temporary, he's a foster, I'm thinking I've made a grave error!

Everyone, meet Jet. How adorable, how sweet... how deceiving a photo can be!
Life in my home is peaceful. I share a very modest 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom duplex with my boyfriend (human) Tim, (canine) Sookie-6 yrs old, Alissa-7 yrs old, Rascal-5 yrs old, Rowe-Quinn-4 yrs old, and Sugar is 8 yrs old! Other than an occasional cat walking past the front room window or a gun shot in the hood, this is a nice life. Not too many surprises.

Now I have a 6-8 week old, highly energetic, slow to tire, German shepherd mix breed puppy. This little guy has no clue about puppy manners, pottying outside, spending the night in a crate let alone walking on a leash, not biting or to go easy on the older dogs of the house.
In that last respect I must give credit to my dogs. None of them, no matter how disturbed they may be by this intruder, has given him anything but a firm parental warning.

I must admit, in his defense, Jet has gotten better about pottying in the house. He's only taken one dump (yes, I said it). But do you know what? Do you have any idea how much human energy it takes for him to accomplish that task? (The pottying outside, not the dump in the house.) Tons. Tons & tons of my energy. I'm zapped. I cry, "why have I done this?" "What was I thinking?"

I'll be adding more to this after my nap.

Having Jet Is A Job

Jet is an adoptable, adorable young puppy, about 6-8 weeks of age and weighs just about 9 lbs. I am fostering him until he finds a wonderful home! I believe he's a German Shepherd mix, but I'm just not so sure of what he may be mixed with. He's black/brindle with beautiful pricked up ears and the sharpest little puppy teeth. His profile seem Chow Chow like, but he's soooooooo tiny. He has no black/purple splotches on his tongue that can sometimes be characteristic of Chow Chows. I'm sorry to say he doesn't have puppy breath (dern it), which makes me wonder if he's really that young.

Jet has a bit of an upper resperatory infection picked up at TLAC in Austin, Texas. That'll clear up quickly with antibiotics. He'll be neutered when he's old enough and will get his rabies shot then. He has started his puppy vaccinations though. Jet is microchipped, has begun crate training, and is trying very hard to pee and poo outside. He actually learned how to come in through the doggie door, just not out to do his business .

If you are interested in adopting Jet, please go to our website at http://gsdrescuectx.com/ for more information. We will not adopt out of the state of Texas.

Isn't he adorable!
